Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

By Peeps

Ditch the cops, because its time for GTA: Chinatown Wars. GTA: Chinatown Wars is a Grand Theft Auto game that returns the series to its classic top down view. Even though it appears on the DS system, there is still a massive world, loads of character interaction, and the classic ultra-violence and shenanigans that GTA is known for. The controls do take a bit of practice, but after a bit of drive time and basic fights it is pretty smooth.

The combat is pretty balanced, but it can be frustrating during certain missions with odd cover areas.  The use of close and long range weapons allows for a few different gameplay styles. Some of the mini aspects of the game can seem kind of intruding into the main story, mostly how much the drug trade requires participation. The touch screen comes into use pretty often, but sometimes the timing for it can be kind of “spaz inducing”. The sound is good, but seems like it could do more for the DS.

The radio stations do not have as much musical variety as previous titles. There is some slight variety in stations, but it is mostly entirely “D&B” and techno based music. There are some familiar artists, such as Deadmau5, but most will be unfamiliar to those that are not fans of dance music. The graphics are well done for the style of cutscene art and gameplay duration. The cutscenes are done comic book style, while gameplay is like classic “bit-type” style.

Overall,  I would recommend this game as something to check out for fans of the old series, but maybe a rental  for newcomers or action fans of the DS.
