Punisher No Mercy is developed by Zen Studios and runs on the Unreal engine which is fitting because Unreal is the game that comes to mind when playing Punisher No Mercy. The Unreal comparison doesn’t mean that this is a bad game, it’s just familiar territory. At times the game feels like Zen Studios took the best part of Unreal Tournament and added a coat of Marvel paint on top.
Graphics. The game delivers visually, every arena, weapon and character model is distinct and feels fresh as you progress through the game. The characters are easily distinguishable and each Villain from the Punisher universe is immediately recognizable. The arenas are full of obstacles, cover and traps that add to the experience.
Controls. Controls are familiar or anyone who has played a First Person Shooter before. For all the fans of Call of Duty I’ll save you some time, the control layout you want is called Sunny. It feels the most natural to any Call of Duty fan.
Sound. Gunshots, check, Explosions, check, Enemies that repeat the same curse filled phrases too often, check.
Gameplay. When I first started playing this game I restarted the game twice. What would make me do that? The trailer for this game gave me the impression that there was a true single player experience at the heart of this game. Instead I got multiple arenas with bots and predetermined kill counts to reach before I would be allowed to move on to the next arena. The story between these arenas is told through comic panels that are flat and fail in their presentation which is disappointing when you have the name Marvel attached to this game. The only redeeming part of single player is that co-op is an option. For anyone looking for a true single player experience, look elsewhere. Look at the single player as an extended tutorial that will allow you to hit the ground running in multiplayer.
Overall. Punisher No Mercy, despite its faults, delivers a good multiplayer experience. Everything that a multiplayer game should have is included her such as multiple weapons, upgrades, and multiple character options from the Punisher universe. If you are looking for an extended single player experience this is not your game but if you want an enjoyable multiplayer game that you can jump into for a couple of hours at a time this is a must buy.
